Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?"
-William Shakespeare
Will I be wrong; most likely.
Will I digress; with certainty.
Will I soldier on in the ongoing struggle of self expression?
Yes.
I am an actress. Now before you get all judgmental, I'm not a prima donna; there's a difference rest assured. Let me spin a definition for you: I am a servant to the playwright. This is a much better description of what I do because the playwright - and I mean a good playwright - creates the essence of everything that a character can, cannot, will and will never do. They are the spine; we are the soul.
But a really really really really good playwright can do both. Enter Shakespeare, stage right...
"A mortal man caressed my heart so sweetly,
My wishful thinking had me drenched in vain.
Had any other gent come to complete me,
I would have treated them with much distain..."
My terrible attempt at iambic, I know (did you notice the feminine ending? GENIUS!). I honestly have no idea how to express the significance of Shakespeare in my life. I've seen Henry V and Taming of the Shrew at London's Globe. I've been blown away by a performance of King Lear at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I've drooled over the workings of Mark Rylance on Broadway's Richard the III.
I've read and seen over a dozen Shakespeare performances and I don't stop there. My guilty pleasure is even She's the Man (yeah, I know you can unclench now).
I love Shakespeare because for me, he represents my interest in all things creative. My search for creativity doesn't end with Shakespeare. It begins.
